Speaking of theories, I believe the backstory involves a deceased Pharaoh and the high priestess Maberix who was chosen to be his afterlife companion since her purity would allow her to pass the Weighing of Souls.
However, the Queen refused to accept this. To prevent Maberix from joining the Pharaoh in the afterlife, the Queen used the "Immortality Elixir" and secretly exiled her to this remote Japanese outpost.

Page 14 thought bubbles' capitalization of text are off.
