A doujinshi produced by the members of the Hideo Azuma camp, some professional, many amateur, featuring a survey on Bishoujo from the late 1970s to early 1980s. As the lolicon boom took off and waned somewhat, the motifs of this imprint changed quite a deal to include a variety of 'pretty girl' books and illustrations proper, focusing less on its original hard ero content.
The circle appears to have been near or at the end of its life - many of its star contributors from years past had seemingly moved onto new things, whereas the content of this particular volume is a lot more tame than what the cover suggests. The size of this particular doujin is also incredibly small versus the nearly 80+ to 100+ volumes that came out years prior. With that said, several advertisements for former contributors are shown, such as for GRIEF and private illustration journals.
“At last, we were able to release issue #22. However, since almost none of the members submitted manuscripts, it ended up becoming quite a thin book. Sorry about that.
Though this is called an editor’s afterword, to be honest, there was hardly any editing work involved on this page. We basically just lined up the illustrations.
Please make sure to properly submit your manuscripts for the next issue so this doesn’t happen again.
If submissions continue to be this scarce, we will truly dissolve the group after this term. This is not an exaggeration!!”
★Accounting Report / Financial Trouble:
This section is surprisingly candid and a bit dramatic.
It explains that a former chairman named Wakabayashi apparently mishandled or spent club funds and membership fees.
Key points:
-Printing costs for issues #20 and #21 were paid by the publisher. -Membership fee money apparently never reached editor Ōnishi. -They still had not received proceeds from back issues. -Only ¥42,200 had been recovered from mail-order sales. -That money was already paid toward debts owed to the publisher. -As a result, the club was currently operating at a ¥17,800 deficit.
The closing line:
“So currently, the Beautiful Girl Enthusiasts Club is in the red by ¥17,800. Well then, thank you for your support.”
It’s an unusually transparent glimpse into how fragile tiny amateur fan circles could be financially but further proof that the circle was towards the end of its life after nearly 5 years of running.
