in response to the dude's paper

if someone is actually interested in using AI to understand a story you don't just feed it pages you use OCR to pull out the script and feed the script and then use the drawing context to correct the rare mistake or give it context on ambiguous wording. yeah people will rip on this too but I can read Japanese not horribly (my anki is at about 5000 cards, I've read some novels JP) and it does quite well like this since it has continuous speech. If the people pumping out the AI shit actually did this 99% of people wouldn't even notice.

wow I didn't know there were tools to rip the text from images. As you say, that does solve the problem I saw from my testing where AI didn't have the full context and continuity of the story and actions.
And yeah, if people uploading AI took the time, only full-time translators would notice but the vast majority who are just hentai enjoyers will not notice.

I can always appreciate someone doing things themselves imperfectly rather than just using a machine and passing off dogshit as hard work. I miss when the rough tl tag just meant someone did a mediocre to bad job. And, yeah, AI can produce a readable script - that's something LLMs are designed for - but there's no guarantee that it's accurate or even representative of the original work. At that point you may as well tag it as a rewrite instead of a bad translation. This is also the broader problem with LLM-based AI: the form is good, but there's no guarantee that the actual content isn't garbage. Why bother reading an AI "TL" if I can just make up porn dialogue in my head like I have been with untranslated stuff for decades?

when you dump the script into chatgpt you can tell you to break it down line by line meaning by meaning and then you can easily verify its output yourself if you understand japanese at all and it's very accurate. It knows internet slang / manga cliche phrasing that you can verify yourself.

it's not fun or rewarding that these tools are actually really good now but they just are. The boogeyman that it's just totally inaccurate and super misrepresentative is not realistic. They were created by stealing and analyzing countless amount of human creation and now they're good. this isn't early DeepL days that literally was just random rewrites when it didn't understand something.

to be clear, most people don't take the effort of dumping the script into chatgpt to do a competent job. they're too lazy for that. the current thing people do of just slapping a page into a tool and using that is garbage.

If your mind is already so far gone that you can't think for yourself and would never know what the sentence should be, it's incredible at explanations because it can make something up and idiots that don't know the first thing about what it's shitting out will jump to its defense.

Bro I think you didn't understand what Crush is saying. He didn't say you should ask ChatGPT for a translation and blindly believe whatever explanation it gives you. He's saying that if you know Japanese well enough to inspect the original, you can have it break down the vocabulary, grammar, slang, and phrasing, and then verify each part yourself.

I mean yeah, it's bad if you're a student doing that just to pump out a translation of something you don't actually understand, but that wasn't the point. The point is that these tools have gotten way better at translating, and pairing them with someone who knows enough Japanese to catch when GPT is wrong makes for a pretty good combo.

Tldr: You don't have to be good enough to translate the whole thing perfectly from scratch, just need to know enough Japanese to look at GPT's breakdown and go “yeah no, that's not what that says” when it starts making shit up. That's the whole point.

If you're good enough to do that then you're good enough to translate. Seriously, no one is asking you to translate and localize Dostoevsky. People in the community have been perfectly happy with stilted, stiff, and overly literal translations for decades. Just put out what you've got and inevitably some annoying geek in the comments will point out where you made mistakes. This is the learning process and it's perfectly normal. You'll get corrected and get better over time. Surrender that to whatever fucking model and you stop learning. You offload that cognitive load onto something else and stop acquiring new information. You end up dependent on the machine while your own skills stagnate or even atrophy, and in time you won't be equipped to know if the machine fucked up anymore.

These justifications are just solutions desperately looking for problems. Though, what these justifications, these excuses, really are is even simpler. It's the AI mind virus du jour: people want to be recognized for something but they don't actually want to do it. They want to be artists, and writers, and programmers, and even translators; they just don't want to put in the fucking work. The computer can shit out whatever and some fuck online can slap a signature on it and claim it as their work. Nobody needs porn translated to jack off. It's always been a labor of love. You take that away and you just get someone looking for attention. What's the point? Nobody makes real, significant money from any of this, if they make anything at all. If you don't care about your own skills, and you don't care enough about the work you're translating to ensure everything is done to the best of your own knowledge from step 1, then why do it at all? To get some ESL Indonesian dude to thank you in the comments? That sucks, man.

I know I wrote that I usually never come back to a comment section I already commented, but after a friend told me "they're fighting in the comments" I had to take a look.

Come on guys, I even wrote that as the finishing note before I gave thanks to my friends, "but tbh at that point why bother using AI". Just like tgos says, keep learning from Japanese you don't know.
