this isn't explicitly bad writing but it is kinda jarring how every page is like a noir detective musing or like an old person writing their memoir about the summer of turmoils on the farm. I guess it's fine to have a few lines like that, but having it almost every page means there's too little room to get a feel of them as natural characters, more % of pages with just raw casual dialogue I think would be better.

You're right that the narration voice was doing too much heavy lifting, to the point where the characters never got to just breathe and be people on the page.
