You can shorten James to Jim, just like you can with William to Bill, Joseph to Joe, Robert to Bob, Thomas to Tom and so forth.
So his "correct" name is James M. Hardiman, as you say.

@Bluntobject I've seen William to Will, but not BILL. I've also seen Robert to Rob, but NEVER Bob. Are you sure you're doing it right? To be perfectly honest, the only one you listed that makes sense is Thomas. My sister's husband's name is Thomas. My cousin's name is James, and my father's name is Robert. My father goes by Rob, my brother in-law goes by Tom, and my cousin goes by James. I've seen Jim as short for Jimmy, but never James. (of course this could simply be due to the fact I live in the southwest)
