Originally, I thought he wasn't wearing a school uniform for some unknown reason, but rechecking the first pages, no, thats just the design for the male students.

Wait, shouldn’t she turn invisible when he sticks his dick in her?

Half tempted to put up a bounty for translating this into Elvish.

Up until the last pages, I thought the twist would be that the actual reason why only she could read the inscriptions was because the artifact was fake bullshit that she put here the previous day, and this was all a ploy to convince him to stop just staring at her and to get it out already.

Awesome work by Okina, as always, and awesome translation.

Did only the hairless variant get translated? Or could we get the hairy version too?

I'm gonna guess that the unreadable bit at the end is supposed to be obvious as a LOTR reference, but as someone who hasn't read LOTR nor care much for it, that just left me curious lol

That was a surprisingly sweet and charming mind control story -- enough so that I almost hope he *doesn't* use the power on anybody else, and stays true to his girl. :-)

I’m guessing not. I looked on J18’s site (doujin.io) and the one uploaded there is hairless only. After that, checking the physical version of the book at hmarket, the description says it’s 82 pages. That isn’t enough space to reasonably contain both the hairy and hairless versions. Finally, their Twitter doesn’t have anything to suggest they’ve published both versions. All the images show the hairless version. Seems like if you want hair, you’re gonna have to stick to the raw for now.

That said, why don’t you try reaching out to J18 and asking about it? If they hear there’s interest, they might be able to publish the hairy version too. No guarantees of course, contracts often make this kind of stuff really messy, but no reason not to ask!

Given that the title was rewritten (and mostly omitted) it's hard to have confidence in the accuracy of the rest of the translation...

Meh, it’s just a different style of translation, and one that’s pretty typical for commercial translations. Titles in particular get changed a lot to make them sound more interesting. They’ve got a financial stake in it, so they’re gonna ditch the wordy title that doesn’t make as much of an impact in favor of something that’ll grab your attention and be more likely to make a sale. “One Dick to Rule Them All” works pretty damn well for that. Same reason that Kaguya-sama’s title is officially translated as ‘Kaguya-sama: Love Is War’ instead of something more literal like ‘Kaguya-sama Wants to Make Him Confess: The Geniuses' War of Hearts and Minds’.

In contrast, the style of translation we normally see here skews strongly towards literal translations, sometimes at the cost of sounding natural. You’ll typically see honorifics preserved (Ebira-senpai instead of Ebira) and you might have translation notes for hard-to-translate details (although I feel like those have gotten rarer over time). Again, different styles. I generally prefer this one myself.

Anyway, I read through this doujinshi in both Japanese and English. Here are the significant differences I spotted:

* No honorifics. Not much to say here except she’s way cuter when she’s gasping “Senpai” instead of “Ebira”.

* Komari’s speaking style. It doesn’t translate neatly into English, so they give her a distinctively casual style of speaking in English instead. (“I really like the reading club’s vibe, y’know?” ) This isn’t the best match. For instance, some of her Japanese dialogue uses literary language, like 来ず instead of 来ない. (Which fits since she’s in the reading club.) Her biggest thing is ending tons of her sentences with a katakana ス. These are things that simply don’t translate well, so they give her a speech style that stands out for English-speakers instead. Pretty typical stuff.

* Page 14, in the Japanese version Komari’s claiming he’s chosen women in general as his oshi instead of any specific woman. This is quite distinct from the English translation’s, “You like me because I’m a girl… …and you like all girls.” That claim ‘you like all girls’ probably isn’t particularly unique among the male students at that school. Claiming he’s an oshi for ‘women’ is, well… weird, but pretty unique! She’s trying to say something rather specific about him! I get why the translation is trying to avoid idol culture terms like oshi, but we miss out on that. It’s also setting the stage for his harem life because it implies he’s not the type to favor any specific girl. The English version just seems like a slightly oddball comment that’s meaningless. It doesn’t come up again though, so whatever.

* Page 28. In the Japanese version, Ebira’s line harkens back to the verbiage used on the mysterious object. He’s describing her upper mouth and his finger ‘becoming good friends’ (仲良し), which is a common euphemism for sex in Japanese. It’s also the term the mystery rock used to describe what he can do. That’s why he’s also going, “I can see it!” He’s not just seeing that Komari’s licking his finger, but also that the message was right. He’s seeing that insane claim is actually coming true. The English version gets the part about Komari and his finger across (“I can see your mouth falling for my finger”), but it doesn’t make any kind of direct tie-in to the mystery rock’s message. He’s left there going, “I can see it!” and it feels like, well, of course you can see Komari sucking your finger, did you expect otherwise? It’s not clear that he’s referring to something else entirely. This one really needs a more usable translation for the mystery rock’s message, something like, “you may get to know her upper and lower mouths” instead of “you may enjoy her upper and lower mouths”. Then, as she’s sucking his finger, he can comment, “I can see it! I can see my finger getting to know your upper mouth!” Then it’d be clear what he’s actually on about. (Incidentally, they’re a lot more regular about referring back to the mystery rock’s 仲良し verbiage in the Japanese version, but the English version is more apt to ignore it. For instance, you can see it on pages 30, 31, and 33 in the Japanese version, but in the English version, it takes until page 33 for Komari to finally mention it.)

* Speaking of the mystery rock, they actually properly refer to it as a go-shintai in the Japanese version, but call it a relic instead for the English version. Fine. It doesn’t actually matter in this doujin, but it’s worth flagging since this is an ongoing series and might eventually become significant. (Though Shiwasu doesn’t seem like the type of author to go deep into the lore and make the distinction matter.)

* Page 42, the most significant difference of all! The Japanese version has a (typical) hard-to-translate SFX, so what does the English version do? A big SFX that says BONER! Significant because it made me laugh!

Most the other differences are negligible ones. Stuff like the Japanese version describing Komari’s tongue as “温か!!濡れっ?ニュルニュル!!”, which roughly means “It’s warm! And wet? And writhing!” That last one is actually a Japanese word which describes the movement of long, slender, and slippery things like worms and eels. (It also sometimes covers squeezing sticky substances out of a tube, like cream.) The English version opted to skip that last term, going with, “It’s warm! And wet? And squishy!” It’s not exactly true to the Japanese version, but it gets the idea across (feeling up her tongue). Given the style of the translation, it works pretty well.

Overall, it’s a good translation. The only thing that dramatically departs from the Japanese version is the title, which was very obviously intentional. The only significant mistake happens on page 28, which really a downstream effect of not picking a better euphemism for the inscription. If those are your biggest problems with your translation, you’re not doing badly at all. Plus, it’s a breath of fresh air after seeing so many MTL slop translations all over the site.

Damn, that ended up being way longer than I thought.

Well as far as Shiwasu no Okina's works go, having an actual mystery twist is nice.

Just hope they land it properly.
