These have always interested me. Does anyone know how hard it would be to attempt making one of these on one's own? It's done in Maya I think, how much expertise would you need? I imagine there are existing models you can simply download and import into the program, it would just be a matter of placing models in an environment, rendering a scene and screen capturing stuff...?

No, Maya is way too expensive, and ... uhm complex for me. You can do this on Daz3D (free >_<) and also Poser (Quite expensive)
You can buy all the stuff for your renders, but still you have to practice/ understand the basic one, like posing, lighting, etc. No it's not that hard, you can learn it by doing.
You don't have to mo-cap / screen capturing on Daz/Poser. You can animate/pose it by yourself or buy those package available (pose file etc).
