Hmmmm, a slightly more introspective work from Alice no Takarabako/Mizuryu Kei, with what would seem to be some pretty overt commentary on historical issues, such the fate of those who did serve as government sanctioned prostitutes in the aftermath of the war. Perhaps in light of all the recent military tensions in the region, just his way of saying war and it's consequences can be pretty shitty. Or maybe he just felt like throwing in some facts to add some realism.

In any case, as always from his works, still hot as hell.

edit:
@wavedash

Not sure how I missed that page when reading, but yeah, that definitely provides quite a bit of insight. Pretty well thought out comments by him about quite a few subjects, such as remembering those who suffered from war but at the same time moving on and not holding grudges, as well as not restricting expression, and they all really are true.

@Wyndia

You do realize that he was talking about the Japanese women in Japan who were used in brothels for soldiers after they lost the war, right? Not the comfort woman from occupied countries. And I don't think he was in anyway implying that anybodies experiences be diminished, but was saying that the past is indeed the past, and that we should look to the present and future and try to prevent things like that from happening.

Also is Nagato like, the designated slut in Kancolle or something? Just about every Kancolle rape/mind break/gang bang doujin is about Nagato, or like here she's the one most into it. Which is cool, because she's the hottest.

these kind of doujins annoy me due to their insistence in ignoring the fault on japan's side, like the reason those girls were forced into that line work, which was because the japanese government wanted to keep "their genes" pure, not because they gave a fuck about japanese women, or were afraid they would be raped lol.

Normally I love Kei's stuff but this one really bothered me and his notes at the end pissed me off a little, mostly because my family had been directly affected by the Japanese in WW2. My grandma and her siblings don't like to talk about their childhoods much and I found out, when I got older, from their children and my parents that they grew up in China during the Japanese invasions.

My grandma lost her youngest sister during that time and to read his notes where he says 'the past is in the past' and talks about comfort women and how brave they were strikes a nerve - especially when nearly all of the comfort women in the Japanese army weren't Japanese at all but from their occupied territories, not to mention it was to service the Japanese Army and not American soldiers. It's just really frustrating and more than just a little insulting, especially when several political parties of the Japanese government keep trying to deny that they never did it or that the women were lying.

edit:
@atlascranga Okay, that just makes it even more insulting. The fact that he chose to focus solely on Japanese comfort women and not even mention what the Japanese army itself did in the notes is honestly more off-putting. The phrasing itself is problematic too, especially as I said there's a concentrated group of Japanese citizens and politicians trying to argue that it was exaggerated or trying to downplay the event using similar language. I'm not saying that we should never move on from the past, but Kei's notes at the end read more like trying to wiggle out of being called out of Japan's own war crimes with 'the past is in the past, let's all move on~'

It's a little like some guy who'd went around beating up other guys suddenly got beat up by a bigger guy, and now he's complaining about how hard it is and how horrible it was for him to get beat up, telling everyone his experiences, but ignoring the fact that he himself beat the shit out of a bunch of other guys.

@anontl Okay, I get your point and I can kind of understand where Kei would be coming from. This kind of hits a sour spot personally because like I said, family history. The ignorance or even denial of what Japan did to other people and its own citizens is really frustrating.

I'm glad people find the afterword interesting. It was the main reason I decided to do a fresh translation.

@Wyndia Keep in mind, the 'brave' comfort women he refers to in the afterword are the Japanese women who served in the RAA. He's not talking about the women in occupied territories forced to serve Japan during the war. For that matter, he doesn't mention that some of those in the RAA volunteered under false pretenses, or were basically picked up by yakuza 'brokers' and made to be prostitutes against their will. Even if Mizuryu Kei says he doesn't want to look too closely at the history, it's still frustrating.

Unlike Germany, Japan never had a major public reckoning for its war crimes. The absolute worst are the politicians who intentionally downplay or deceive people about what happened, but many people simply don't really know, or intentionally avoid the subject. Sadly, there's a lot of ignorance about what happened, and while that may be 'easier' for people, I don't think it's healthy in the long run.

It's kind of miraculous that this subject came up at all in a doujin, and I'm actually sort of impressed by how much respect he shows for the women being depicted, given the rock-bottom standards of hentai. It'd be easy (and kind of typical) for him to show all the women completely giving themselves over to lust and being happy, but the ending shows how damaged Haruna was by the experience, and how she desperately wanted to escape it the whole time.

If anyone wants to read more about it, there's a good article here: http://www.nytimes.com/1995/10/27/world/fearing-gi-occupiers-japan-urgesd-women-into-brothels.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

also yes nagato is signature rapedslut because "oh hey i see you are a strong character time to mindbreak your ass off", i don't like the pattern because it's repetitive and boring and nagato's the best

so to be fair to mizuryu i've pointed this out before but it's a heavily ingrained idea of honor in japanese culture and not wanting to accept horrible stuff that happened. they don't really like having the idea of honor defiled and i guess that accepting that is definitely not kosher, not in GLORIOUS JAPANLAND NIHON #1

it's just a really fucked up culture in general, if you don't even accept nanking how are you going to accept that your own nation did horrid shit to its own citizens, pretty interesting of mizuryu to actually draw a depiction of some stuff that happened afterwards

anyway yeah i guess this is really hot but too depressing to jack off to

@Wyndia Because America is coming clean with its own war crimes like firebombing/nuking cities with the explicit intention to mass murder non-combatants so that 'war comes sooner and their soldiers can be spared', right? Curtis LeMay himself told that he expected to be judged for war crimes if Allies lost the war, yet even today most Americans will tell they're in the right on that account. A heads up: Countries will sweep their dirty stuff under the rug if they're able to. Mao and his goons killed more Chinese than Japanese ever did and his birthday is still being celebrated in China. This is how the world works, winners are always right in the mediums they can project their power.

As for the doujin, it still criticizes Japanese government. I don't see why you're upset because their atrocities towards Chinese aren't depicted. It wasn't even the issue here.

"It's a little like some guy who'd went around beating up other guys suddenly got beat up by a bigger guy, and now he's complaining about how hard it is and how horrible it was for him to get beat up, telling everyone his experiences, but ignoring the fact that he himself beat the shit out of a bunch of other guys."

You pretty much defined post-9/11 America. Japan did horrible stuff in WWII and got the deserved punishment and scorn at least and got their lesson afterwards.

It is undeniable that common Japanese were also victims of the war as depicted in this manga. But Japanese never want to know or admit that they had been guilty for second world war itself and numerous war crimes.
I don't think Japanese should be like German who hardly mention their damage, bombardment on Dresden to say, from second world war. Wrongs by the axis can not justify those by the allies. Nevertheless, at least, they should not consider they suffered because they lost the war. But the first part of this manga shows it.
Moreover, if he had known anything about comfort woman from occupied territories, since his manga is sure to remind readers of it, he should have mentioned about it. No one take it as right description or depiction if someone just mention, without saying anything about those by German Nazi, massive killing or deportation of German.
And I also want to point that Mizuryu also made a mistake. Although comfort women by RAA was mainly, at least should have been, 'voluntary', to some point it wasn't. In some advertisement, working condition were falsely explained. Many didn't know what exactly they were going to do. It is exactly same as what had happened when Japanese attract comfort women from occupied territories. Many were forced to serve because of poverty. But Mizuryu depicts it, almost, as an action out of patriotism. It can be right for some, but not for many others.

Man...I tried to not add a comment to this, but my main man Mizuryu Kei really let me down here and I'll explain why. He is nationalistic and Japanese, which I understand, and must have been in a deep historical mood that month...and he apparently experienced some really annoying and extremely rape-prone Americans.

HOWEVER - being a "slut" is an individual choice. That is what makes it hot. They go against what is outwardly suspected by society and culture. This triggers emotional responses that create "jack-ability" of a work based on "slutting out". If you give ANY REASON that being a "slut" is okay, you ruin the "jack-ability".

His historical analysis aside, it kills the work.

THEY DIDN'T DO IT FOR JAPAN, THEY DID IT BECAUSE THEY ARE SLUTS. DOUJIN FIXED.

(In fact, it makes it better, due to the rush of emotions caused by betrayal. This thing felt FLAT, because there is no way in hell it could be both a porn excitement piece and a documentary of the reasons that Japanese women who prostituted should be forgiven and loved at the same time they were being thought of as "dirty whores, OH YEAH" by us, the viewer, which seems to have been his intention).

***I personally prefer when he makes full-on, un-fucking-forgivable, "how could you wear that in public, you trashy slut", and "you just wanted to have sex all day" types.

The time for Japan to apologize for their war crimes is long gone already, the generation responsible for the shit in WW2 is for the most part decrepit and long gone. There's absolutely no sense at all in trying to get them to shame themselves after so long. Not just that but I hate how people like to neglect that most of SE Asia and specially Korea was a backwards shithole with not even modern plumbing until Japan stepped into power. Was the cultural purge and upheaval awful? Sure, but to claim that the Japanese committed ACTUAL genocide when the records are so flimsy and exaggerated by communist China propoganda is stupid.

With that said I do find it stupid at how asshurt the author seems for what America did back then. Were it not for us Russia would have invaded them completely, and trust me those Russians were rape plus murder happy, just look up all the rapes and murders done by Russian soldiers during WW2. Also Japan was very willing to take the war to their own country, they even had a plan to beach their battleships and use them as fortresses. By the way, no I'm not ignoring the fire bombings done on Kraut citizens or Jap citizens either, that shit is just as unforgivable along with the starvation and detention of German citizens. But there's such a thing as pride in one's country, and then another is turning a blind eye to the crimes committed by it.

In fact discussions of stuff like this is when I bear in mind something a veteran told me he learned the hard way; As a soldier there's a great difference between having loyalty to your country and having loyalty to its government. This will always be true regardless of your nationalism or patriotism.

The funny thing this issue? Those post-war Japanese "comfort women"? They were forced into brothels catering to allied soldiers by the JAPANESE government, not by the allied occupation forces.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recreation_and_Amusement_Association
It also only lasted for 4 months before the occupation forces shut it down.
And many of the women were ALREADY prostitutes from brothels which had previously refused to cater to the occupation forces.

Oh there were certainly a large number of rapes committed by individuals, and most of them got away with slaps on the wrist. But there is a staggering difference in the scale of the crime.

15,000-20,000 cases of criminal rape by individuals in 1945-6 before the allies cracked down on it.
vs
200,000+ comfort women being imprisoned, raped, & often tortured... every day... for over decade.
+who knows how many cases of individual rape.
+forcing your own citizens into prostitution until the occupying army shuts down the brothels in disgust.

When the ratio rapes committed by your country's army vs rapes committed by your enemy's army is over FIVE THOUSAND TO ONE... You don't get to complain that the flower of Japanese womanhood was defiled by those evil foreigners.
