I kinda agree with this decision. It's cute but I'm not sure how much longer he can keep this dynamic going. It has limited comedic potential. He might have been able to expand the premise but I honestly prefer a sweet succinct story.

While Tolkien certainly codified the concept of the western 'orc', it is not like this series would have been any different if you substituted it for 'oni'. The concept of the big, monstrous humanoid brute dominated by desires IS cross cultural.

Elves.....eh, get around the ears and it is just 'powerful, magical, beautiful, somewhat arrogant race' in most works. Again, you could easily substitute it with the Tenin from that one Japanese tale (and have her throwing the heavenly robe at the oni, saying 'oh no, you have stolen my robe! I can't escape! It looks like I am at your mercy!')

You could easily substitute the characters with those from Japanese mythology with little loss. It is mostly a flavor thing when it comes to choosing more western fantasy figures, with some difference given to the 'just like in an ero doujin' stereotypes this is playing off of.
