It has been around since the early 2000s (and probably even further back then that). It was mostly centred around a small group that kinda shared the same types of models that appeared in their blogs(then geocities) and websites. Now with the increase of sharing platforms like pixiv and more accessible outlets for selling you work, the number of people who have become interested in this stuff has increased.as well.
