I don't think that's how bullying works. Maybe he stops picking on her and maybe he stands up for her to his friends but they don't just suddenly embrace her because she did something for him. And while in this case the bullying is based on discrimination for her appearance, standard bully psychology states that they bully to make up for their own shortcomings so the last thing he would do is tell them that he had to be saved by her, if anything the increased sense of inadequacy might make him pick on her more. Which would be sad. (But realistic)

Well that's certainly one possible outcome, sometimes things _do_ work out okay in the real world. Incidents can drive people apart or pull them together- and it's not unreasonable for a situation to humanize the victim of discrimination as happens here, forcing their tormentor to confront the reality of their actions and the person behind them. It doesn't always happen, but it certainly _can_ happen and that's what the story here is about.

The thing I find most interesting is actually that the birthmark(?) on her face is shared by her mother- it's much more typical for such things to be portrayed as a result of an accident or other misfortune, so having it be something she's always lived with (and that her family did as well) definitely sets it in a different light.
