eh, kinda. not so much 'keep her cute' or such, as 'let her enjoy her time before her responsibility/duty keeps her from doing things like this.' She was so focused on getting stronger and not being seen as worthless that the Oni shikigami weren't answering her summons so that she'd slow down... though of course this had the opposite effect as she thought she was too weak and tried training accordingly. And Ran, presumably, knew this but couldn't say it for some reason or another (not sure why on that part. awkwardness or they asked her not to?).

Like Dakkan said, Ran and the shikigami wanted Chen to slow down and enjoy life more. If you look at other work from this artist, Chen is in a hurry to grow up and be useful, so much so that in this doujin she neglects her own well-being. They want her to slow down and continue enjoying life rather than force herself into her role as one of the Yakumo who tend to the barrier.

One thing the translator mentioned during the editing process is that on page 27, when Mokou yells "It's okay!", the original line is, "You're fine the way you are!" It's to tell Chen that she doesn't have to compromise who she is just for the sake of being a Yakumo, so she shouldn't repress her desire to go out and have fun. She's still just a kid, so there's no need for her to hurry up and act like an adult.
