There was a set up to it, just in a series of text stories the artist wrote and posted on their hentaifoundry http://www.hentai-foundry.com/pictures/user/ThirtyHelens . The art is a lot more awkward than the stuff she was doing before she started this comic, but I assume that's because she's trying new things and being very adventurous with the camera angles. Once she starts to get comfortable with this stuff I assume she'll work out making it look a little less goofy.

Honestly the bodies are totally fine.

It's the goddamn faces, Jesus Christ.
The eyes could be ok, but the hair, ear loops, lips, TEETH, and nose are all terrible. I don't know how a woman could look at the mug on page one and say "yea she looks attractive".

Needs to work on those faces and it could be some good material.

The character design wasn't very good at first but I love Doxy so the post-hiatus part of the comic looks lovely to me (even though Mamabliss is my fav <3)

I honestly don't see why you would think that. Nobody cares that the author is trans. What people seem to dislike is the early character design. I myself find it subpar to most of the stuff in here. It has obviously improved since, however.

Don't get the hatred for the face in this. She's mad in the first image, hence the sharp teeth, but it evens out over the rest of the comic. I think one person didn't like it and the followers wanting to be cool just piled on.
