How come the anime never elaborates on these things eat in the wild? I know that the eat berries (and a caterpillar in an early episode), but an little bit of reality isn't going to kill anyone...Wait...It will in this case...

constrictor snakes must kill their victims first before swallowing them, or else their prey will fight back and they can burst out. a snake that just ate and is digesting a previous prey is very vulnerable and cannot constrict another. aditionally a snake's muscles are very weak from the inside as oposed from outside(like a crocodiles jaw) and any live prey can easily fight by extending their limbs to make the smake explode. also there seems to be an awful lot of oxigen inside that huge ekans... but after all, is a pokemon we're talking about, those things don't obey physical laws...
