You are dodging the fact that the aforementioned doujin got more than 300 favorites with your non-sequitur here.

Let me be clear: CGR's translations may not be the best but, hey, at least they do a good deal for many people (perhaps the majority) waiting for a reasonable translation of some promising work. Besides, the other groups translations aren't any better than of the CGR ones.
Therefore your appeal to false analogy is a failed argument. It is the same as saying that @warellis not liking that CGR translation (despite being rated as 4.5/5.0 by the whole e-hentai community) still believes that the Earth is flat, just like some fundamentalist zealot (and it is less likely that the majority of people around this cruel world fit into this category. And more likely to comprehend that the Earth is round, might I add).

And the main point of my last comment was not the usual CGR bashing, but the good doujins that still remain untranslated. For example, the Kaki no Tane circle's several Sakuya sweet doujins, not translated to English for around 3 years. Feels bad man.

A translation getting a number of likes has very little to do with the quality of the translation. Most people probably couldn't tell a well-written rewrite from an actual translation.

Point in case: there's a decent amount of translators that produce absolute shit-tier translations (I'm talking translations where the translator has misunderstood or misinterpreted entire pages of dialogue), but they still get a huge number of likes because the people who can tell the difference in general aren't going to be reading the raw versions and comparing them to the translated version.

A quick example of what I'm talking about: https://e-hentai.org/g/875017/e5b677722f/ This is one of the most poorly-translated manga I've ever read (like, the translation is so far off the mark that it's not even funny, and actually most of sureok1's translations are piss-poor), but it has over 2000 favourites.

The issue with stuff like this is that other translators will see it and think, "oh, someone's already done a translation, I don't need to work on it." So while there's an abundance of stuff that isn't translated and I guess any translation is better than none in most cases, a GOOD translation is far better than a shoddy one.

All that said, CGRascal's reputation mostly comes from the fact that he used to produce a lot of awful translations. His recent stuff isn't so bad (it's not great, but it's close enough for the most part). The editing could still use work (not that I can really talk).

I agree entirely what you said. I'm not wanting to say that favorites/ratings must be considered an iron-cast rule of quality of translations, but those indicators might give some ideas about the translations uploaded here, you know.

The CGR translation and your example (the Yuuzi Sinodzuka one) corroborate my point that people want to see good stories with at least a quite good translation, although they might not be able or interested to notice differences in quality of translations. In other words, quality of edition/translation is important, but for these people (maybe the majority), it is not of something of first-order importance. For them, it suffices to comprehend a quite good translation (that doesn't ruin the original plot) and one more doujin to enjoy even more.

What you said about good and shoddy translation/editing works, it's absolutely right. But it doesn't excuse the fact that some people are prone to bash some translators here regardless of his translations. I'm not wanting to defend some translator/group, but claiming endlessly that ,,CGR translations give me eye cancer'' is ridiculous. Because, you can see, his quality of uploads varies (from bad to really good), while there are other groups that does the same (or even worse, like Saha not translating or blanking text balloons in some works) and aren't targets of such crusade. At this level, wanting to induce that all CGR translations are of the same shitty quality is disinformation. To be more succinct, dishonesty.

It's fine to demand better translations, alright. IMHO, in particular, the CGR translation of the Yamaxanadu doujin is at least passable and doesn't ruin the plot. For the ones wishing some other translation of the same work, good luck. Although it would bring more benefit to the hentai enthusiasts here, by the reasons exposed above, if instead of working in this title, putting effort on some good work still untranslated.

Actually, this is going on a bit of a tangent but the translation I linked isn't even "good". It's awful. Like, literally completely incorrect for pages at a time. Now, ignoring the bubbles left untranslated (they're just moans, I suppose) and the grammar issue in the first bubble ("I've made my mind"), do you not see how the translation on that page just entirely changes the nuance of what was actually said? Like, the translation doesn't even fucking make sense. How does, "ah, geez, I'm telling you, it's no good" even follow from the rest of the dialogue, ignoring how blatantly wrong the translation is...

I'm not interested in breaking down every page of every bad translation ever, but when I said that most people can't tell the difference between a rewrite and an actual translation, I meant it. The thing I linked is barely better than a rewrite (yes, some stuff is translated correctly, but it's clear the person who did it has a very, very basic level of understanding of Japanese and struggles with anything remotely complex). But nobody who reads it and doesn't also read the raw and compare is going to know this.

The point I'm trying to make here is that it's not really a matter of whether or not it's passable and does the job; some translations are just plain BAD, but 99+% of people who read it are not going to know, so how much something is liked doesn't mean much (to me, at least) when the people judging it don't really understand what they're judging (beyond "this caters to my fetish"). Like, yeah, OK, people are happy with it... But people would also be happy with rewrites that they didn't know were rewrites... I suppose if this doesn't really matter to you, then so be it, but I think it's kind of like a big "fuck you" to the original content.

And the bigger point I'm trying to make here is that when a bad translator does something, it discourages other translators (who might do a proper translation) from doing it, which, IMO, is a bad thing.

So yeah, there's a plethora of other stuff they could work on instead, but, from my own perspective, it's somewhat demoralising to put a relatively large amount of effort into some things (I translate, edit, QC, double-check everything, triple-check everything, etc before I put anything out) and then see someone with a half-assed understanding of Japanese throw out a half-assed translation. It's like... why fucking bother?
