Have you ever read any information on airbag safety? Children should not sit in the front seat of a car and can (and have) be killed by airbags. Unlike an adult where the airbag will hit the torso before the face, an airbag hitting a child will hit only the face and cause severe neck injury or death from a broken neck.

The big fat warning label printed on the passenger sun visor advising children are the safest in the back seat shouldn't be ignored.

Other dumb things you can do is have a backwards facing baby seat because it can't be secured properly and can lead to the same neck injury or smothering if smashed into the seat.

@GGigabiteM is half right. Air bags are not good for baby. But:

"Most states only require that infants stay in a rear-facing car seat until they're 1 year old and 20 pounds. Research and real-world crash data tell us that toddlers are five times safer if they stay rear-facing until they're at least 2 years old, though."

@Darlumina: Why is Judy in the back? My wife and I pulled out of the hospital driveway with our first baby, who said "meep," and I immediately pulled into another driveway and my wife hopped out and got in the back. It took a couple weeks for our skittishness to go away.
