@kothar that is not how tolkien orcs were at all. there is nothing about rape there. and tolkien orcs are actually ex-elves who were tortured and magically corrupted into transforming into orcs. They came in both genders

@kothar yes, this si closer from the D&D orc, but ultimately, D&D orcs come from Tolkien.
Basically all that is orcky comes from Tolkien. The only previous mention of orc we have is in Beowulf where the word "orcnēas" refers to monsters that are the descendants of the biblical Caïn, whithout any more precision as to what it is, and a totally obscure etymology. All translation previous to Tolkien put this down as "ogre".

Tolkien who liked Beowulf a lot decided to take this word and create a lore out of it. So even if there might have been a previous concept of what an orc was, all "modern" orcs concepts ultimately stem from Tolkien.
