@moximoore: That's the point isn't it? It's the perspective of the ones being controlled, rather than the ones doing the controlling. A single one-off scene explaining how this world came about would be out of place from their perspective, because to them nothing's really different. They question the world order at times, but that's akin to feeling embarrassed and experiencing self-doubt in a situation that puts you on the spot, so they just write it off.
