Yeah, I found out that it's easier to copy/paste blocks of screentone (in a new layer obviously) than faffing about with the clone brush. Provided obviously that the author left free a big enough chunk of similarly-shaded background ...

Cheers for the advice. I did that in a few areas, but not many. Unfortunately in a lot of places there's a subtle gradient which makes a huge block of incongruous dithering obvious at a distance. The dithering pattern also isn't pixel-perfect in the scan, so you start with the clone brush on one side of a block, perfectly-aligned, then by the time you're at the other side it's off by like one pixel and stands out like a sore thumb.
