It was an attempt to move away from the bright happy and general light attitude of works from the 1980s. Many works [such as Cool World] went overboard with this. As if to say “the 80s are done, get over it. Look at how dark and edgy and serious the 90s is going to be. Fun isn’t fun, dreary is dreamy.”

You got it all wrong, Bakshi had a completely different film in mind but the execs etc basically rewrote and it came out as it is. It was going to be a horror film about a half-human/half-toon girl getting revenge on her parents for having here. The sex was actually there and the girl would be an abomination of sorts.
