@AriesWarlock: The originals were only 4-bit grayscale, contributing to the smaller file size.
OptiPNG, a lossless optimizer, will shrink (e.g.) 03_001.png from 8.8 to 3.6 mB (converting from 3x8 color to 8-bit grayscale).
But the original (raw's 001.png) was only 1.4 mB. Where did the extra 2 mB come from?
Comparing the two, you can also see that image was cropped (removing a ragged edge from the scan on the right) and scaled up to match the 2175 x 3065 size from the RAW. This makes the halftone dots noisier, and was apparently done as an 8-bit grayscale operation, up from 4-bit, accounting for the extra 2 mB.
