Duane Bryers (1911-2012) did not paint images of the "New Woman" that Hollywood and the fashion industry were elevating onto pedestals in the 40's.
No, for over 30 years he painted a "Hearth Goddess" with a mischievous sense of humor and a constitution that could better deal with Life, and one for whom carrying-to-term and childbirth were no life-threatening ordeals.
And, unlike most of the 'big name' pinup artists, he did not work with a live model. All those images came from his mind only, and that makes him a true artist.

That Hilda was popular is in no doubt. I saw her images in hundreds of rural gas stations, garages, workshops and small businesses during the 50's and 60's.
And from what I've read recently, she is becoming popular once more as a back-lash against the 'frails' so beloved of the advertising and so-called 'entertainment' industries.

I'm not sure of the 'hotpants' tag. During the 40's and 50's such 'cutoffs'(cut-down jeans) would have been the equivalent of a 90's thong... Hilda's are mostly 'home-made' and I'm not sure if that disqualifies her 'hotpants'...

This triggered the random trivia part of my brain and I remembered the since flour used to be bought in large cloth sacks, folks would use the old flour sacks for homemade clothes. It was such a common thing that various flour brands would design their bags around looking nice when you cut them up.

I prefer to use the term "Rubenesque" instead of "BBW", and that's exactly how I'd describe the lady featured in these images: "Plump or rounded in a pleasing or attractive way."
