@Number1TioFan I've heard that before, it's actually completely wrong. Japan has had mandatory censorship laws in place since the Tokugawa era, and had it written in as part of the Meiji Constitution, long before WW2 even happened. Japan is the only entity responsible for Japanese porn censorship.

@tj911 Incorrect. Japan's first recorded implementation of censorship was during the early days of the Tokugawa era, when the country was closed off to contact with Western nations and Western values. They were very much in a state where Western values were rejected, so to say that they were copying the gaijin way of censorship is completely out of the question.

Major props to @sgc_geh for having his facts straight. The law in question, Article 175 of the Criminal Code of Japan, has been in force since 1907. If anything, it's enforced much less strictly now than it used to be, you used to have huge black rectangles covering the whole fucking crotch area in porn from the 70's and 80's. That law will not be removed in our lifetime. No politician in Japan, or anywhere else for that matter, will ever successfully run on a "let's uncensor porn" platform. It's career suicide, political opponents can label you a pervert, and the media will treat you like a joke. It's always much easier to push through censorship laws than to remove them, especially when they're that old and a whole country is used to them, and most of its citizens are old people.

The only Western influence I'm worried about is that the Japanese government might push to further regulate, limit or even outlaw loli, shota, and rape depictions in porn in order to please international sponsors ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics, but that's a whole different can of worms. The dick and pussy censorship has been there since 1907 and it's here to stay I'm sorry to say. There's no point in bemoaning it other than to vent.

Technically those censorship laws were western-influenced, because Japan wanted to "fit in" with the more developed nations, who at the time also censored everything. Of course, now the western countries have moved on from puritanical values like that, while Japan (and the rest of east Asia) still haven't.
