If you use xnview you can clean up the images more:
Select b/w pages, then Batch Processing.
Format: PNG, then in Transformations:
Add: Map - Levels. Black: 30, White: 225.
Add: Filters - Enhance Focus.
Add: Convert to Greyscale 64.
Add: Convert to Greyscale 16 (Optional. For smaller size).
Total archive size reduced to 63MB.
