Lain is like the embodiment of an existential crisis. Her expression at the bottom of page 4 is so absurdly complex, I don't know how ABe manages to convey ten different conflicting emotions in a single shot.

It's not my translation, I don't want to take any merit.
Btw ABe it's a extraordinary artist and the depth of the created characters is amazing also for an anime of its years (where Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Evangelion ecc were recent and founding pillars of anime themes). Reducing Serial Experiments Lain only as an anime talking about the future of Internet it's approximate imho.
