The source images are extremely low quality JPGs. This translation uses PNG. Creating PNGs from lossy JPG creates massive filesizes, because the JPG artifacts ruin PNG's compression.

You see, English has a low information density compared to Japanese, so an image with English in it naturally takes up much more space than the same image in Japanese. #TheMoreYouKnow

(qazmlpok is correct. I tend to prefer uploading it lossless, since filesize isn't a huge issue for most people and image quality is. The site already provides resample archives with much lower filesize, and ideally I'd like to introduce as few artifacts as possible when I'm working. Maybe I just spend too long staring at all this art in high res, though...)

Did you know that none of your files are leveled? Not a single one. I can tell because on page 4, that forest is supposed to be black. Levels are color correction for the raw scans, mainly blacks, greys, and whites. All of these parts that I've circled in green are a dead giveaway that your files aren't leveled: https://puu.sh/GSx3H/1a4fd59f6d.png.

Now I'll level the scan correctly to fix the problem: https://puu.sh/GSx6F/116b9f2b7d.png. Notice the forest is properly black, and the blacks are fully black and not greyish noise. If something doesn't look right, you need to level your scans. Make sure that blacks are black, whites are white, and greys are preserved. That's what leveling does.

Onto the other issue. While it is true that PNGs are larger than jpegs, my guess is you just saved it "as is" the quickest way possible, leading to a large filesize. I saved that same page from the RAW with just the regular save option, saved it as a PNG, and gave it the quickest speed (but largest file), and it came out to 2.25 MB, which closely matches your filesize. There's another option called "Export to Web", which I'll show below, assuming you use Photoshop:

Using those settings, that same file now in 32-color B/W PNG is now 1.41 MB. That same PNG is roughly half the size of yours with almost no recognizable differences. The Export to web option is your best friend if you want to trim down your excessively large files into something more manageable. As I've stated in other galleries with filesize issues, your project files shouldn't be significantly larger than your source files, barring few exceptions. If it's larger by 10 or 20 MB, it's not a big deal (unless your project's a 4 to 8 page long black and white project). Hopefully I was of help to you.
