It get worse since Japan has got the right to host 2020 Olympics, appearantly Abe's government has made the censorship guidelines more strict to "making Japan became more family friendly" in visitor's eyes.

I have seen a lot of such things over the years. Managers and executives that pull such stunts are generally in a position where they have bonuses and promotions to gain for "savings" (such as one regional manager for a hundred stores instead of say 8), but stand to lose nothing at all from any failures or issues that arise as responsibility for those is still being seen as that of the individuals below this manager and not his own.
Generally the only way this backfires (this one probably fopped off the shit-pile onto someone else within minutes) is through malicious compliance or going above the manager's head to ensure he goes down with you (very slim chance you get his job instead though so, worth it).
For example if the husband had known how many people's jobs he's doing and had gone above his boss to request additional resources, the hammer would've fallen down on both of them - he for having broken hierarchy - but at least the other guy gets in deep for having been screwing the company.

I get working conditions in Japan are harsh but yeah, him being the "only" person who can do his job where he's working nonstop for six days out of the week (and gets called in on his day off) is immediately fired when he doesn't come in on his day off? That doesn't really mesh up at all. Plus it sounds like he's in somewhat of a low level managerial role at whatever company this is. Then, how did his wife immediately get work to support them? If she could work the entire time, why wasn't she as a means of relieving her boredom?

Still a cute story though.

You should check out stories of "Black Companies" sometime, the husband was getting strung along and chances are that that bonus was going to mysteriously vanish after the busy season and the parent company started downsizing because they don't need as many employees as they hired.

Considering that he was put in charge of so many stores, the company's aim was to cut costs on wages and the like, their tactic in this particular case was probably to promote an employee to Regional Manager when the peak season hits and have them run themselves ragged until they either quit or screw up so that they can fire them towards the end of peak season (I don't think that either case would need the company to pay the former employees retirement packages either, I could be wrong though). He was simply the latest victim in a long-running meat grinder.
