Hello right now I'm working on translating Ozaki Akira Old Manga. For this project I'm using AI (Artificial Intelligence) for upscaling and retouch low quality scan manga. The hardest part about translating old manga is sometimes I can't read kanji mostly because it's so damn tiny, to put it worst the author sometimes using non standard font (like handwritten font) so it's very difficult to read.
I hope you enjoy it. Please write in comment if there is some grammatical error on my translation Thank you.
You can see my project here : https://ko-fi.com/darkagent
Darkagent, you upscaled it, but you forgot to level your scans. I'm assuming you're using Waifu2x to digitally upscale the manga, which is a good thing to do, but at the same time, the initial scan must be fully cleaned before you do so, or it only exacerbates the problems. All the text bubbles and empty space are supposed to be all white. Also, all your pages are in RGB color instead of greyscale, which means your files are excessively large. Even upscaled, 25 pages in 2400px size shouldn't be 84 MB. These 6 images below will show you how to convert your files to greyscale from RGB color and export them as greyscale PNGs (or jpegs if you prefer), even though I can clearly see you don't use Photoshop to edit. Before you look below, get a copy of Photoshop or GIMP, preferably Photoshop:
1.) This file's in RGB color by default, circled in green: https://puu.sh/GQDIS/d06e7b5d38.png 2.) Showing you how to change from RGB color to greyscale: https://puu.sh/GQDNH/2f7cec4ad9.png 3.) Discard color data to change: https://puu.sh/GQDOf/353dee9762.png 4.) Now the file's in greyscale, circled in green: https://puu.sh/GQDQw/e918d2f029.png 5.) Using the export to web option: https://puu.sh/GQDSu/8bc322505f.png 6.) Export settings for 32-color B/W PNGs: https://puu.sh/GQDXR/4e507aad3a.png
Let me level your example page to show you how it's supposed to really look, after being converted to Greyscale from RGB color: https://puu.sh/GYxM6/d7e4f7e2b6.png. That's what all your pages are supposed to look like, with fully white speech bubbles and fully white borders around the manga panels and margins.
And yes, you should definitely use a comic font like Wild Words or CCMeanwhile and center justify your text. Comic Sans has no place in any legitimate edit. I'll take that same page and show you what a proper typeset looks like (complete with fixed grammar and phrasing): https://puu.sh/GYy1y/594aa1d686.png. Even with that one font, the project looks infinitely better than before.
While I was doing that, I noticed that your grammar and phrasing were awkward and didn't come off as natural English, which tells me that you're not a native English speaker. There are plenty of people who are willing to proofread your work, preferably other translators, but you need to ask around. Post in your Uploader comment that you're looking for proofreaders so that everybody can see and potentially PM you to offer their help. As an editor for the LWB scanlation group, I can tell you that collaboration with like-minded individuals will yield great results. Even the best editors and translators need another set of eyes to QC (Quality Check) everything that they've potentially missed.
Now the only thing I can't help you on is the godawful whiteout censorship. You're on your own for that one :)
EDIT: You use Linux, Darkagent? I'm sure there's some version of Photoshop (not GIMP) that's compatible with Linux. Again, put your request for QC in your Uploader comment above. That's the very first thing people see in this gallery, so putting your request down below is counter-productive. That said, I'm glad to have been of help. You can always update your gallery as you add more chapters, as long as you update the gallery name to reflect it. People do it all the time on e-hentai where they correct their earlier mistakes in later updates, so at some point, I'm expecting these first pages to be fixed.
@THDragon Hi, thank you very much for the advice, I will try to implement it for next project. Like you said before, i don't use Photoshop or GIMP for editing but Krita because I only using Linux. Oh btw it would be great if somebody willing to proofread my work. :)
thanks for the hard work, but please stop using anything other than center aligned text.. also, instead of "trying for next project", please fix this one before you move to the next. i also wonder about one thing: 3 volumes of this and you chose to start with the second instead of the first one. why?
