"What the heck is 'haigure'? Where does it come from?"
Haigure is a niche transformation fetish that randomly gained popularity on 2chan over a decade ago. It's based on a movie of the old and intentionally absurd Crayon Shin-chan series. An evil overlord named "Haigure Mao" (Devil King) invaded the Earth with an army of soldiers that wore pantyhose on their heads. These aliens would turn people into "haigure humans" - "haigure" appears to be a corruption of "hairegu", itself a Japanese form of "high leg (leotard)", who wore highcut leotards while performing what's generally known as the Comaneci pose in Japan - more on that below - and supported and obeyed Haigure Mao.

The Comaneci pose, which is what this pose is commonly called in Japan, is said to have originated with Romanian gymnast Natalia Comaneci, who supposedly worked the pose into her routine as a means of standing out in the hyper-competitive gymnastic scene.

Later, a Japanese comedian, Beat Takeshi, who found the pose amusing, started using it in his routine, and this popularized the pose as a form of physical humour in Japan. That's from where Crayon Shin-chan adopted it.

The creators of the movie would have been familiar with the origin story of the pose, and so combined it with colourful leotards, which were cut more provocatively than a typical gymnast's leotard, because Crayon Shin-chan was an unapologetically crude show.

As mentioned above, it inexplicably caught on several years down the line, and went viral. And it has its fans to this day.
