Tankoubon copyright says 1998, so about a decade later. And well... trends change. Manga from the 1960s and 1970s (think Koike, Ishinomori or Tezuka) look much closer to either Disney art or woodcuts and the style we have today kind of evolved during the 1980s and was adopted and changed as the times went on.
