Kind of an odd mix... Covers are from the digital version (https://e-hentai.org/g/1882955/85967aa13a/), whereas the pages are from the 1280x downsample of https://e-hentai.org/g/1894897/1edb8261fb/ . You didn't download them from some aggregator like NH that mirrors EH galleries, did you? Because those 1280x pages had been saved at 80% quality and thus are a poor choice for subsequent edits...

Wow, you're very observant. I did mix the digital and manga scans. And I did get them from NH. I had no idea they were saved at 80% quality. I really don't know much about downsamples and aggregators and 1280x pages and so on. But I'm grateful that you're pointing this out to me.

Ah okay, everybody does that at first these days. On this site you'll see a few versions of a boilerplate comment to explain how these things work, here's one:

Thanks for the release, but please for your next ones do use the correct raw. The pages that you've modified are 1280x1800-something, whereas the original at https://e-hentai.org/g/1894897/1edb8261fb/ is 2100x3000. That's because you've downloaded them by right clicking / save on the gallery images here, or more likely got them from some aggregator that scrapes this site.
E-H by default doesn't display the original images but instead lower-quality copies whose default width is 1280 pixels that are saved as 80% quality JPEGs. Those downsampled images are okay for viewing and fapping to, but aren't really suitable for editing because (apart from the smaller image dimensions) you're starting with a noticeable quality loss right off the bat, and moreover if you too are saving to lossy formats like JPEG you're stacking noise over compression noise.

Here's how to get the best possible quality raws:
0) Avoid aggregators. Yes that also includes NH-dot-net. Even if it has so much mindshare these days that people cite doujins by just their 6-digit gallery number there, NH has no original content; proof is that you've come on E-H to upload your gallery in order for it to appear there. Aggregators don't scrape the originals but only the resampled 80% quality version at 1280x that's full of compression artifacts, so you're pretty much guaranteed to get a low quality raw on those sites.
Here on E-H there are three main methods. In order of convenience:
1) Torrents if still seeded, usually that's the case for stuff released in the past few months; just avoid those with 1280x in the name as they're for the downscaled version
2) Archive Download link - Choose "Original Archive", may cost some GP depending on your level, stars, how old is the gallery etc.
3) Page by page, by using the link under each image that reads "Download original source" (if there's no such link, the image displayed for that particular page is already the original size).

Thank you for explaining how this works for me. So all I have to do is avoid NH, and try to Torrent or Archive Download from here, making sure to look for that 1280x isn't in the name. And then I have to save my edits in PNG instead of JPEG. That's easy enough. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me improve the quality of my work.
