@Bloodly2 Technically he wouldn't. Your interpretation comes only from the anime version of the final battle, most of which never happened in the manga. In the manga, Gohan was fighting with one arm and half his ki gone, yes. But he had all the power he needed to finish off Cell, he just needed to dig deep and overcome his uncertainty. Vegeta's blast barely did anything to Cell in the manga, only serving as a final FU before he got finished off. Gohans final spurt against Cell overwhelmed the android instantly, who had been visibly struggling to overtake Gohan the entire bout.

The anime over dramatized the bout.

That's not how narrative works. If Vegeta's attack was unnecessary, it wouldn't have been done, manga or anime. There is no point of an FU if it doesn't further a story.

You are thinking of the wrong attack. The prompt is referencing the moment right after cell killed trunks when Vegeta bull rushes Cell and gets bitchslapped. So if Vegeta didn't get the chance to attack, Gohan wouldn't have been injured protecting the prince.

@Muffdiver884 - I'm referring to the beam struggle when Vegeta shot Cell at the last moment. It didn't do anything to Cell, and neither Goku nor Gohan knew that Vegeta was going to do that. Gohan was going to unleash his full power on Cell regardless of whether or not Vegeta took a shot at Cell. Beyond being a very Vegeta thing to do, it didn't add anything of worth to the story or move the plot forward in a meaningful way since Gohan killed Cell in the next page. The scene was done just to have Vegeta contribute a bit at the end as well as give the prince a chance to have one last laugh at the android before Cell bit the bullet (a scene they made all the more comical in the DBZ Kakarot game when Cell's face got walloped in a very cartoonish manner when Vegeta made that same attack. Don't believe me, go watch the cutscene). An attack from base Vegeta against a hyper powered up Cell going full throttle wouldn't have done squat. It only made sense in the anime adaptation when Vegeta hit him as a Super Saiyan and buckled him, but again that was over-dramatized.
