Since "damage" that happens during a Bankai stays, in the final fight portion, his two swords combine to form a bigger sword for his new bankai, but his original Zangetsu is in the core of it (the outer part breaks off, final blow).(Page 15-16 of chapter 684). Ichigo has always been strange as a soul reaper because most dont keep their bankai engaged. (Mainly due to the fact that most of their Bankais had major drawbacks. Rukia's with one mistake will kill the user, Kyoraku's effects anybody in the area, Captain Genryusai's would anihilate SS if used for long periods, Zaraki's sends him into an even greater berserk state, Shuhei's (reveiled in the novel), links his and his enemys life and reisatsu together as an average (Say his was 50, enemys was 100, both would be 75)., Shinji's Bankai is actually useless if he isnt "surrounded by enemies", since it inverts Friend or Foe.
