Btw, while I wish Nintendo didn't go after him, the creator didn't do himself any favors by sticking too close to official Nintendo artwork. Maybe he would have had a stronger case against Nintendo if he had used his own unique artstyle but by sticking too close to Nintendo's own official stuff it really put a target on him and made it that much easier for Nintendo's lawyers. His Metroid work is a bit better but his Zelda guide borders on plagiarism. Look up Katsuya Terada's Zelda art and compare the Link vs Ganon pic to the one this guy made.

Hopefully this isn't the end of fan guides though.

No, I agree. Nintendo definitely has proven themselves for going after everyone and anyone. I just think the creator could have made a stronger case for having a derivative work or maybe even be allowed fair use if he didn't reference Nintendo's own official artwork.
This guide has Samus in poses very similar to Nintendo's manuals. And his Zelda guide is straight up copying a lot of Katsuya Terada's Zelda art.

Btw, I'm not disagreeing with you. I did enjoy this guide. I thought the comic style was fun to read and he had some jokes that made me really lol.

The artist, Philip Summers, probably doesn't appreciate you taking his name off his hard work. You may think you're doing him a solid by removing his name, as if you're protecting him from legal troubles, but really you're only hurting his future revenue by making him difficult to discover.
