I think the artist has explicitly manifested at least once that those "edgy" pictures are their way to cope with some actual trauma, yes, from living in a very harsh ambience. So, sadly, we can expect the marginality and violence now and then, not because they "like to be edgy" but because they feel the need now and then to let that out.
