I see so many on Steam. Are they fun games?

@TheLoneTerran Sorry in advance for the wall of text that I'm going to inevitably ramble in and I'll try not to make it sound too overwhelming lol. But yeah I'm very biased/fair (It's one of my favorite game franchises) and they are all great albeit niche/pretty dark/emotional games, but you have to be into heavy story/character development/mystery driven gameplay. Reason being outside of a few minigames, the game most consists mostly a point and click style with tons of text boxes that should be read (they are visual novels basically except for the adventure game Ultra Despair Girls). The flagship games are partially voice acted (class trials are entirely voiced though, which are the big gameplay moments in the game). Ultra Despair Girls is almost fully voice acted though. Personally they are great if you take in all of the information you can from the game and are easy to get immersed in. It's a murder mystery/detective series. Great dub voice acting and amazing music in my opinion. They also seem to hold up with age. Most skip the separate novels, but the play order for story is Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa: The Animation (Anime adaptation of Trigger Happy Havoc, do not watch before playing the first game because it's watered down and leaves out a lot of side stuff from the game, basically optional/only for recreation), Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Ultra Despair Girls (Optional for minor story tie ins/character development), Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School - Despair Arc/Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School - Future Arc (2 separate Animes that tie up the story for the first three games, I recommend watching Future 1>Despair 1>Future> 2>Despair 2 and so on because that how it was intended to be watched originally, Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School - Hope Arc (Only should be watched after finishing both the future and despair arcs), and lastly Danganronpa V3 (not to be confused with the 3 anime because SDR2 and V3 never received direct anime adaptations, and V3 is the last major flagship installment in the franchise that we currently know of). Again I've purposefully left out any of the additional novels/manga because I don't think they are vitally important unless you want the all encompassing story.

Sorry for the delayed reply, but it was quite kind of you to type all that up. I still don't have much exposure to the series but found out a friend enjoys the series as well. She explained some of the basics for me. I'm fairly familiar with the one woman, Junko, with her hairclips being helpful identifiers. The mascot bear for sure as well. And apparently my friend has a soft spot for one character named Mikan or something similar. An ultimate doctor or nurse or something similar.

It sounds like I shouldn't get too attached to any characters either. And that some of the games have a friendship or dating sim lite aspect with gifts and the like to get closer to other characters. But if any can get offed at any time...sounds dangerous.

Hopefully they're not quite as dark as say, DDLC. A friend who was unaware I take medication for anxiety and depression and attempted suicide, gifted a copy of DDLC+ for me on Steam citing I might be interested since I enjoy literature. Definitely shouldn't have ignored those warnings! Thought having agency in situations like the class trials would help a lot.

With your recommendations for the series, I'll throw them onto my wish list on Steam and grab the first in the series to see if it is a good fit during the next sale. Thanks for sharing everything!
