A combination of factors. 1. I use a multitude of translation services, deepl, papago, google translate. If there is uncertainty about something (usually due to the ambiguity of pronouns), it's not difficult to infer meaning based on the context of surrounding text I *am* confident about. Other times, I look up individual phrases online to get a better understanding of their approximate meaning in English, or even ask about it on r/translators.

I somewhat understand the opposition to this method, and would be grateful for those who are familiar with the language to point out any errors, but it's my position that this is a step up from no translation at all.

Another classic that I hear about 10 times a day. If you knew how many horrible translations were made in the name of "something is better than nothing", you'd realize that nothing is indeed sometimes better than something.

This isn't specifically aimed at you and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you did your homework as I honestly don't care enough about a time-stop CG set with a single image variant to do my usual song and dance, but still - be careful!

Yes, I'm aware of that specific case lol. And yeah, it's quite true that machine translators are oftentimes unreliable. During this process, besides cross-referencing with a variety of translators, I frequently I go out of my way to check different parts of a sentence to verify if it's actually the way DeepL has construed it, or if there has been some kind of error from the algorithm missing context, or has been lead astray by a weird combination of two parts of the same sentence when combined.

As for the "you'd realize that nothing is indeed sometimes better than something", I suppose I founded my statement on the assumption that even if there were several errors, they would be the exception rather than the rule. Question this if you as you feel it deserves, and I'm sure that in so many cases such as the one you cited it is indeed merited, but I personally doubt that if this *were* the case here, the rest would be rendered incoherent by virtue of the error.

At least your english is decent, which is a step up from quite a few of the machine translations we get here. As an additional note, one of the reasons you might not want to attempt a translation when you're not fluent in japanese is the cooling effect any translation has on others. People don't tend to re-translate works that have any translation at all, so a poor translation can doom an otherwise decent work. Just some food for thought

I'll admit that the concern you express is the one of the few misgivings I feel at the idea of committing to this kind of a translation. Ultimately, though, I don't know if I really see that danger as outweighing its benefits. Besides just that, in the case of this specific artist, I've noticed that there are very few instances of their work actually receiving translation. Since I'm a fan of the time-stop genre, I thought it would be a shame if his work faded into obscurity altogether from English-speaking audiences.
