The idea I got from the original is that he isn't even sure it's supposed to be drank, since he says "飲み物かどうか [...]".
The second sentence does feel a bit awkward, especially because it's in a different tense.

I think its less "supposed to be drank" and more this could be drugs or medicine since those often use 飲む as their verb. Maybe making the 'just' in "I doubt its just a drink" bolded or putting it in italics might work
