had to convert image files to PNG in order to upload, the torrent file contains the original JPG, as well as another torrent for the PDF

Unless you downsized the PNGs as well for the upload, the PNG conversion is lossless. There's no reason to prefer the JPG files.

JPG is a terrible format for black and white manga images, so it's very annoying that many sites insist on using them.

The JPG files were the original files that I downloaded from DLSite (plus the pdf).
EH only allows for JPGs up to 20MB in size and many were 30MB+, so I had to convert to PNG, which ended up downsizing the files anyway.
As I used a free online converter, I can't speak to the quality of the conversion, which is why I used the original files in the torrents.
I would have preferred not doing anything to the files personally.

Thank you for the information though, I genuinely appreciate it.

@qazmlpok Don't go around spouting nonsense. JPEG level 12 is almost loseless and is smaller than PNG almost all of the times. If you use a shitty compression level as in the galleries in the automated 1280x versions of this site you get shitty looking images, is just that simple.
And you would prefer jpg to png in images with soft color gradients like in digital manga. What you must avoid is going back and forth, and once you downscale the information is lost forever, you can never go back.

I just dled the jpg torrent and converted it myself using imagemagick. The online service didn't do any downscaling. They're the same files, just smaller since they're png now.

By "downscaling" I meant reducing the size of the image or otherwise altering it in any way, not merely changing the filesize.

@gamaroguar
> JPEG level 12 is almost loseless
and PNG is lossless, not "almost" lossless.

> is smaller than PNG almost all of the times
The JPGs are literally 10x the size of the PNGs.

> you would prefer jpg to png in images with soft color gradients like in digital manga
You'd prefer JPG for full-color images, where they do outperform PNG filesize-wise. Covers are fine as JPG. inner pages are not. Keep in mind that even if the artwork uses soft color gradients (not guaranteed - and not true here), the typesetting will not. Page borders will not.

PNG 32, +256 colors are not inherently smaller than jpeg, not all of the times, you just said it, it is loseless. When the images are very simple with not many colors for instance, pngs tend to be smaller. To make pngs smaller you need to shave off color information, that is something not many new scanlators do, (some even shove png 32 with a transparency layer with rgb on top ffs) and by that time you can't say it is loseless. And jpg 12 is indistinguishable from the original, so is pretty much enough for me, you literally have to do a bitmap and extract the colors to see a difference.

And what i mean soft color gradients is not the edged of the lettering, (that is almost nothing), i mean digitally painted backgrounds or skin color (mangaka mostly don't use screentones when doing digital), if you try to reduce the file size by scrapping colors on those you get banding, you are almost forced to go 256 colors, in those cases jpgs tend to do better at reducing file size while keeping the image more than good enough.

What i am trying to say here, if you have to do a digital manga, it might be better to save it as jpeg. You can't just outright discard jpeg. Maybe i'll vouch for webp instead when Cdisplay can read it.

But anyway, you can go ahead and use PNG 32 for everything, or better yet, make it a full bitmap, for the sake of being loseless, while being an unnecessary waste of space and energy and get the 400+ MB monstrosities for a 20+ page doujin you see around from time to time.
