These are Eastern characters and their names are actually translated. Cynthia is シロナ or "Shirona” and Lucas is コウキ (Kouki) Just like Ash’s name is サトシ (Satoshi) I like to think Sphpicy is being faithful to Japanese source material and keeping their personalities in-character.

And while not ideal you *could* start a relationship loving somebody while your partner only kind of likes you and the build from there. And in the comment I was originally replying to it would mean you are not in the same level romantically. (which was the whole point).
