A big chunk of it is that the audience in furry, pretty much by definition, isn't looking for any of the stock character designs you find in human porn. This tends to give furry artists more room to try things out and both find good character designs and gain the experience in coming up with them.

The good news is that the way to learn their secrets is simple, the bad news is that it's hard work: Design characters, lots of them, make sure they aren't what you would normally come up with.

@TheGoodGiggle Furry artists' first priority is usually 'this is what gets me off'. There's a whole lot of exploring beforehand of body types, styles, and various details until they get what they enjoy, because it's all about making something they enjoy, and if other people enjoy it enough to pay for it, all the better. There's a kind of shamelessness in a lot of furry art, which is one of the things that makes it appealing.

Most other genre artists are working from one of two standpoints. Either they're working from preexisting properties which are designed to have mass appeal like rule34, or they're looking to maximize the income potential. Not that there's anything wrong with monetizing your interests or skills, but to have the greatest appeal to mass consumers and easy production usually means fairly dull and easily replicated designs.

Ouch, currently on page 66, and the last couple of pages here have hit some emotional notes I wasn't prepared for. The presentation, the sudden flashes forward in Wilson's memories as he slowly comes back to reality, the utter melancholy of his inner voice as he scans through those thoughts, somehow making the title and lyrics of a Billy Idol song of all things sound depressing, it all hurts in a very real way. Jesus Christ, the last few pages (~163) are heartrendingly sad. I just wish I could be there for Nerdbird and give him a big fucking hug, after a past of traumatic experiences with family and cutting as last resort, I really connect with the story here-
