At this point companies should use DeepL, it will have the same accuracy and a good less quantity of entitlement and bad practice.

This... would be a legitimately engaging subject for a fully structured, sourced, case-by-case and extensive essay about malpractice and information manipulation in the localisation process. However, I would argue that a bunch of mostly disjointed Tweets and ESPECIALLY unverifiable *chan posts aren't exactly the best standard for hard evidence.

I don't think some of these are that bad. Yeah, there's a lot of PC shit and translators inserting their political views into shit, but like, some of the comments are just about how they try to strike a balance between writing a direct translation (if that was even possible, it isn't) and writing something with totally different words but the 'same rough idea' for the sake of maintaining sentence structure or making it readable. Professional translation is the translation of coherent japanese into coherent english as accurately as possible, and if your boss tells you that it's more important to make the sentence understandable and readable to than it is to try to explain some archaic japanese pun that's very funny in japanese but totally untranslatable, that's what ends up happening.

You can't translate expressions fully, and you can't translate all word association jokes, cultural references or puns, and sometimes you have to use a similar but not quite the same expression to express to the reader that someone is trying to sound a certain way. That's just how translation is, and that isn't gonna change for a very long time even with machine learning-- DeepL still ain't at the level of even recognizing a lot of expressions, let alone making good sentences out of them.

That said, a lot of official translations are shit, and they deserve getting the hate they get. Take the translation seriously and without stupid bias or get the fuck out of the career.

To the "Misc" with this shite.

As for the matter of it:

1.
What the hell is this shite - https://e-hentai.org/s/0a4109c2dc/2355978-6 ?
"Retranslation"? "Original"?
What side is censored?
The way I see it, "Original" is just a pure garbage, absolutely unsuitable for consumption. Is it the so called "censored" version? If so, what exactly being censored here? Or something decided to just vomit random text generator output under the pretense of "translation"? Then it is not 'censored' - it just shite. Also, if that's original, that means that translation was from English to English. So, where's the real original?
And this is just one random picture I clicked on a whim.

2.
What's Magiconvert said.
I could go on and on about translation issues, but it would fall under the purview of Department of Redundancy Department at this point. See Point 3 for wall of text and anecdotic snippets.

3.
It is not only Japanese>>English.
Russian "blue" and English "Blue" are two different colours. English "marauder" carries implications of both fame and infamy, whereas Russian "мародёр" has only infamy to it, and far closer in this to original meaning of the word.
French have no direct analogue for "hot" - only "scalding" and "warm". (So far as I remember, at least)
The whole godsdamned concept of Schadenfreude + quite a few feelings defined in Portuguese that simply have no words for them in English.

Speaking of English-to-English translations: language drift is a thing.
Word "they" as a designation of a singular person of unidentified gender, and not the group of persons.
"Bigot" was a compliment some years ago, you know - it is literally means "a person of strong convictions; one who stands by their God regardless of situation". "By God" <=> "bigot". Go on. Make a compliment in this way to someone now
Word "gay" was culturally appropriated by the alphabet crowd when they grew tired of playing with "bachelor". Which meant the same back in the day. And, yes, it was culturally appropriated too by the crowd who absolutely hates 'cultural appropriation'.
Word "awful". I personally had a discussion on the matter - related to my pet peeve, Ivan the Fourth's Anglospheric title 'the Terrible'. The word "awful" means "full of awe". As in "Moses saw the terrible face of God, and was awful". The "terrible" here is synonymous to "awesome", as in 'inspiring terror and awe' (remember 'shock and awe' warfare doctrine?) - which, by the by, means that Ivan the Terrible is, in reality, Ivan the Awesome - and Moses became full of awe, 'awful', witnessing such grandeur with his own eyes.

Even the meaning of colours have changed over the time.
Not so long ago, pink was considered to be unquestionably masculine colour, whereas blue spoke of delicate femininity. Guess what, fothermuckers - it ain't so anymore at this day and age.
Did you know that white is a colour of death and despair, whereas black is colour of joy and happiness? Well, now you know.

Culture - don't get me started.
In Gilgamesh's time kiss on the mouth was the to go way of greeting between two perfectly heterosexual men. Now, even the concept of "platonic life partners" is so far out of question, that even mentioning it brings out a crowd screaming "get out of closet". Because everything and anything must be related to either sex, or money, right?
Russians consider anyone who smiles baring their teeth an overly aggressive rube with no understanding of culture.
Americans think of anyone smiling without showing their teeth as an inherently untrustworthy sleazebag.

Go ahead - try to translate a mention of someone with pearly-white teeth, laughing gently, and wearing a kimono embroidered with "gay white owls".
Hint - that's a maniacal psychotic serial mass-murderer and the Big Bad of the story.
His description is as it is not to create a cognitive dissonance, but an analogue of someone coming in with hands drenched in blood, taking a bite from a heart he plucked out of most recent victim's chest.
Try to translate that in one sentence.

And now, for the anecdotes (like the snippets above were not...):

In Russian official translation of Harry Potter Severus Snape was renamed to something akin to "Norden Frostt". It stemmed from similarity of the name 'Severus' to Russian 'север' - which means 'north' - and was intended to convey harsh coldness and aloof hostility of Snape towards Harry.
Why that was implemented instead of direct translation?
Because every single godsdamned wizard name in the 'Harry Potter' franchise bears double meaning - and the name of SS, according to author, was meant to sound like a snake hiss. Which in Russian would lead to appearance of 'Sheverush Shnape'. You can imagine.
So, in the end, translating the HP you either discard all the secondary meanings, or localize instead of translation - in which case some meanings and snippets are still lost, and the multitudes scream "CENSORSHIP" off the top of their lungs.

Bagheera. Of The Jungle Book's fame.
In classic Russian translation, Bagheera is she.
Because that's how feminine forms of the words in Russian sounds like.
There is a masculine name: "Bagheer", which would serve nicely - but the translator opted for not changing the name of the character in favour of changing the gender instead.
Which lead to many, many moments in Kipling's magnum opus, initially intended to convey father-son dynamics, to now have decidedly and distinctly romantic/sexual undertones.
Not to mention the whole juxtaposition of noble and brave warrior Bagheera versus lawless and cowardly marauder Shere Khan transforming into "a brave mother protecting her adopted child" aspect.
Because of one bloody change in the story.

BUT I DIGRESS.

This is the reason why people watch more sub anime from sites that don't censor and change the dialog to not offend your feelings. There is no "XEM" or "XE". There is them, they, he, him, she, her.

Every company has their own standards on what they will even TRY to adapt into a localized version. Let me bring up when Funimation was making dubbed episodes of Ishuzoku Reviewers. Holy shit, they abandoned the project at episode 3 while it was still airing. Again, at some point they tried to adapt an anime about fantasy brothels, bought the rights for English distribution, hired voice actors, edited like 2 episodes before they said "yo this isn't Christian values," and jumped ship. They ARE based in Texas, so I can understand the retardation, nonetheless.

I'm saying Reviewers was the best anime of 2020, which... actually says a lot about 2020 anime. Still, I'd like a second season.

Tbh, the dialogues in Fire Emblem Engage were the worst, most of the interractions with the Divine Dragon made me feel from "cringe but funny" to "really uncomfortable"
And now I'm learning it was dialed down by the translation ? thank god

Also, I can't fathom the mindset you must have to see a scene where A Child is romanticizing you and your reaction is like : "Wait, the kid did not implied being my lover in the version I played ! That's censorship !"

PS : Of course, representation of people of colors as censorship, again, yikes

I'm glad we have this, since there was such debate about whether or not anime and manga was being censored. We can finally put that question to rest.

It's pretty schizophrenic. And now bad journalism is part of the 'muh censorship,' collage. Just take all of these, pin them to a board, and then wrap red twine all over. It would fit masterfully.
