Disappointing story, but I get that we might all be feeling that way because it's so true to life. I couldn't help respecting Kenji for telling Nanami to stop leading Naoya on while he's on the island. Sort of a let down that Naoya had a crush on Nanami, but what do you expect? In short, NTR is "the feeling" of being cheated/betrayed - however, technically it could be not cheating or betrayal and just the feeling based on selfishness on one's personal view. I like the irony that Kenji tells Nanami about not leading the other guy on when it is the author who is leading the reader on. Everyone was lead on by the author that Nanami would end up with Naoya. I can appreciate that there's a more modern definition of NTR than the traditional usage, but I still cannot accept that this is an NTR story. Firstly, this sentiment that a Japanese mangaka would be more well-versed on a concept simply because they're a mangaka or that they're Japanese proves to be a circular argument at best. For lack of a better example, people misuse the term racism all the time even for issues that are only ethnic bias (ie. a Frenchman hating all Italians but not all white people which would be self-hating racism). That doesn't make them any better informed about its proper usage; it just means there are more people misusing it than there should be.

Your explanation entails that even if the feeling is only all in his head, it should be NTR. That's a bit of an unfair interpretation, isn't it? If I see a hot girl and suddenly fantasize about her being with me only for it to turn out she gets with someone else later, then she has been stolen from me, right? My one-sided, selfish and unjustified feelings of jealousy are enough to think of her as some whore who only wanted to lead me on, right? This issue of unjustified possession and entitlement is where this story loses weight as an NTR story. She never made any promises to him, in childhood or otherwise. They were really good friends and she always only saw him that way. The guy left a girl who never thought of him as a love interest, struck out in a place where there were a lot more women to choose from, and then came back thinking the one girl he knew would always be waiting for him. If any and all senses of entitlement to a girl "just because" can be considered NTR, then my word, we must all be living NTR daily.

I'm not even really an NTR fan, but I can tell you this: as dense as the girl is, my rage is with the protagonist. I can't feel sorry for him and his unreasonable expectations, especially when the idea is that even if he did manage to find someone else in the place he moved to, he'd still have just expected this girl to be waiting for him. That's egotism and entitlement, but if that's really what you're saying NTR is, then my, how NTR has fallen where any female can be hated for even the smallest of reasons. The mangaka can call it NTR all he likes, but I'm more inclined to believe he copped out and didn't have the heart to make the girl screw the protagonist over. Even more so since the guy she ended up with really was a pretty decent guy.

While Nanami doesn't owe Nao anything as far as his feelings are concerned, it's kinda messed up that she would lead him on like she did(why she didn't outright tell him about her relationship with Kenji and even acts like she completely hates him when he first shows up makes no sense at all). Kenji comes off like a good dude for trying to make her realize this, but she just plain doesn't listen and even does it *again* on the final page(pay attention to where all their hands are in the last panel with all of them in it, Kenji's left hand is in his pocket while Nao's isn't).
