I got hooked with Final Fantasy because of something similar...
It was a colorful part in a computer-related magazine giving guides about Final Fantasy 8 - I was young back then, and got drawn in by the colorful pictures, then the fantasy it provided..
I didn't know English at that time... I played the game with a dictionary aside me - it was 1999 or 2000 back then, the internet was not so widespread at my place yet.
And that sparked my love for English, Japanese RPG game, and fantasy.
