Ah the typical lie "people have always done this" which only works if you, like most modern people, are either self-delusional or have a constantly-resetting memory. Go watch some old TV. Read old books. Show me a single thing made before 2016 (aside from perhaps a game wiki for a game where the protag can be male or female, those fuckers started it) that uses the pronoun 'they' in place of a proper noun or a specified person.
You can't, because the pronoun corresponds to nouns like "someone" or "anyone." or "who." as in "who's on the phone, did they hang up?" but you do not say "I had a nice long phone conversation with my broker, and they said.."
This is cultural hijacking, you have been caught, you need to just start admitting "we're changing it. we are harassing people who speak the old way, because we feel the new way is better, and we value the comfort of the mentally ill over the sane." Because you might fool the children, but the rest of us know, not only did we not use it that way, we, in fact, had to START saying "he or she" in the 90s, because before we just said "he."

Here's a grammar style guide from 1993 listing several authors that use singular they in their work:

"In the 14th edition (1993) of The Chicago Manual of Style, the University of Chicago Press explicitly recommended using singular they and their, noting a 'revival' of this usage and citing 'its venerable use by such writers as Addison, Austen, Chesterfield, Fielding, Ruskin, Scott, and Shakespeare.'"

Now, if you have a fucking brain you will realize that 1993 is earlier than 2016, and those authors were writing books before the 90s. Also your example of using they when talking about your broker is a completely normal thing for someone to say, assuming of course they don't get triggered by pronouns.
