Out of curiosity, I started running different translation AIs on old H-manga by artists like Ash Yokoshima, Kuroiwa Menou, Saigado, Yui Toshiki… and more than 20 well‑known mangaka in total. And you realize that Japanese artists are amazing at drawing, but they're pretty bad at adapting or rewriting their own stories. That’s why fansub groups decided to alter the dialogues to make them spicier and more varied, because the original lines often repeat themselves and it gets tiring for the reader. Considering the amount of hours the mangaka puts in, their assistants should have told them how to give the story a different angle so it wouldn’t always feel like the same template…

So the problem isn’t that people use AI to translate manga nowadays, but how they use it. The worst case is the fully automatic approach—letting it do everything without cross‑checking with other tools to see if the dialogue is actually correct. As for the initial message, it’s inevitable to embellish it a bit, but at least in my translations the story’s context is preserved about 96%, even if the dialogue tends to be polished or made more concise. In regular manga you can’t do that as much, because you might accidentally alter the story, especially if the next chapter doesn’t match due to not knowing how the plot will continue or if there will be an abrupt twist.

In my case, my Japanese level is absurdly low — I can barely read Yotsuba — so for my ‘translations’ I initially uploaded drafts made by a single AI. It wasn’t about posting them just like that, but hoping that someone talented would later do a proper version. My idea was simply to make the work known, but in the end I decided to do it properly myself, using GIMP + LibreOffice Writer + six different translation AIs (one of them with an annual subscription) to get the clearest possible interpretation of what the mangaka actually wrote.

For this same manga, I made the Spanish version of chapters 2 and 3 because my annoying friends wanted to know what they were saying and didn’t want to wait for the full volume to be released so they could get the uncensored version…
