The title Light and Shadow draws its name from The Castle of Cagliostro, though it is deliberately framed to evoke the dual tonalities present within the work itself — the interplay between “lighter” and “darker” subtexts embedded in the illustrations. The phrase operates on multiple levels, suggesting both aesthetic contrast and thematic duality: softness and hardness, innocence and sensuality.

Closely associated with the so-called “Cla-con” (Clarisse complex) set, this text functions as a visual survey centered on Clarisse de Cagliostro, while also extending its focus to characters such as Lana from Future Boy Conan and Maki Oyamada from the final episode of Lupin the 3rd Part II.

Among collectors and subcultural historians, this publication is regarded as being highly contentious yet significant within early lolicon and otaku print culture, particularly because it emerged during what has retrospectively been described as the era of “forbidden books”. These works typically combined lolicon themes with pin-up conventions — presenting singular illustrations of female characters in vulnerable, suggestive, or stylized poses. Their format echoed contemporary idol and adult pin-up culture, borrowing visual language from both while transposing it into the sphere of anime and manga fandom.

Comparable titles such as Lynn Minmay's Erotic Photo Album or Mika Private Collection, both exceedingly rare, fall into this phenomenon. Influenced by the popularity of “vinyl books” (ビニ本, bini-bon), these publications were often sold sealed in polyethylene or OPP bags, preventing browsing prior to purchase and reinforcing their aura of exclusivity and taboo. Although their reputations suggest extremity, many surviving examples are relatively softcore in content. Some were privately commissioned or anonymously produced, while others took the form of collaborative goudoushi volumes bringing together both amateur contributors and more established artists of the period.

In this context, circles such as Binidō became known for intentionally adopting the “vinyl book” presentation style as both a practical measure and a performative gesture. The sealed format amplified the sense of illicitness and subcultural identity, marking the book as something outside ordinary commercial publishing, especially at Comiket.

Light and Shadow Vol. 1 features contributions from multiple illustrators, some of whom remain unnamed. Due to its subject matter, format, and limited original distribution, the work has rarely surfaced on the secondary market. Its scarcity, combined with its thematic positioning within early lolicon print culture, contributes to its continued mystique among collectors. The present high-resolution presentation may represent one of the first instances in which the volume has been made viewable in such clarity.

Additionals about its packaging:

It is generally understood that there were several editors involved in this work and the circle itself, however, Ito Shinpei stands out as the main editor and individual behind its publication, themes and further sales. It is understood that he illustrated this particular work, though not the depictions of school girls. There are several mangaka and illustrators who worked on this particular series, however, as of current modern record, there are only about 5 texts that were ever made between 1981 - 1983 or so. A Satoshi Nakamura, more than likely a pseudonym, is listed as the point of contact for mailing at a P.O. box in Yokohama City, Kohoku Ward.

★From the words of my friend Kudan and their blog:

"It goes without saying that the name is a combination of Anidou, an anime fan club that made a big splash at the time by publishing the Fukuyama Gic Book, and vinyl books, which had also been a hot topic a while ago.

It may not seem like much nowadays, when even at book fairs, each book is sold individually in an OPP bag, but back when book stores didn't even pack books, selling doujinshi in plastic bags was quite an adventure. Just look at the cover and the plastic packaging and you'll understand."

★Sales history:

This work in particular was sold at Comiket 18 on August 15th of 1981 for 700 yen. A cheeky phrase is given to the viewer in the following manner:

"Send a razor sticker to the publisher"

This is a play on cutting open vinyl books as well as a means to continue communication.
