I was wondering what was off-putting about this, for some reason this comic didn't seem to hit as hard for me as the standalone images of this pairing. Looking back to those images, it's easy to see why: their dynamic appears to be completely retconned.

The duo's earlier depiction had the whole "no homo, bro" sort of dynamic between the two, but in the sort of endearing way where a gay couple would often tease each other about being gay. It was obvious that such was being played up because they found it in some parts amusing and other parts hot. Finn dressed effeminately in those images too, but since there was no evidence otherwise supporting any sort of gender dysphoria or the like, I can only assume he dressed like that because that was what Roy was into, and it was easier to get a rise out of him that way. There wasn't any tangible doubt between the two loving each other for who they were, at most just teasing each other for not having girlfriends of their own.

Here, Finn divulges in her history of being ridiculed by her family and then fiancé about wanting to be a woman, expressing regret about evolving into a Gallade instead of a Gardevoir, choosing to be referred to by Roy as his "princess" and "wife" and, by the narration in the afterword section, as female. Obviously, this is to depict the sort of baggage Finn was carrying around up to this point, but the original image set of the two played into quite the opposite of that; they were dudes, they were gay for each other, and they were ultimately proud of all of that.

This isn't to insinuate that such a turnaround in self-identity is unrealistic, but there wasn't anything to bridge these two dynamics together, nor is it what I personally enjoyed about this duo in the first place. What was once a character that was proud of being a gay femboy is now a character that had to come to terms with being a trans woman, with the self-doubt that led to that completely self-contained in this story. It feels like Bridget all over again.
