I didn't realize the main story was actually set in the past until you mentioned it lol. But I just went back to the first chapter and they were playing on PSPs so I guess the main story probably took place around 2010-ish.

The blue double-spread page at the end with the photos do have dates on them to give hints to the time main events happened (2005).

Other hints include: flip phones, PSP-like handheld consoles (which you pointed out already), and *arcade music* is actually caramelldansen BGM (trust me, I scanlated this also so I checked the raw, just in a different language. Also that vinegar lyrics is a common funny derivative way for JP kids to sing to caramelldansen tunes too).
