Given that the raw gallery is also 1gb, I'm guessing the filesize isn't your fault. A big part of the problem is that the images are RGB color, but only use around 300 colors. The grey tones are all slightly off-grey, which forces the use of RGB color for the png despite really not being necessary.

I haven't tried converting the whole thing yet but it'll probably knock the filesize down to at least half.
